Organic olive oil: water, pruning and human attention all year round
Our olive grove is taken care of by a team of workers under the supervision of a professional agronomist and of course ourselves, the family.
There is a mini-lake created decades ago which collects water during the rainy months. It serves to give the water to the plants through the draining system the summer periods when there are months of no rain at all.
Apart from this, each year we do the pruning that helps the trees to maintain the shape and remain healthy. In the normal year this is enough to have a good harvest without boosting the ground with chemicals. The result is inevitable less than with an intensive farming with the quantity-aim as a priority, but we consciously chose to pursue quality and sustainability instead.
In our area it happens that the olive mosque (Bactrocera oleae) damages the trees and this affects the harvest. Luckily, we didn’t suffer from it during last years. But in case our grove did get affected by it, our agronomist has a cure that is natural and is allowed to use by organic test controls.
The Martum olive grove, we completed the 3 year process of organic certification in July, 2021. Since then we can label our olive oil as organic.
